The Band AND Flag Corps will be marching in the 500 Parade on Saturday May 26. We will be accompanying one of the Salute to Champions theme floats. We are looking for flag bearers as well as musicians to join us for this festive weekend. If you haven't been around for awhile, now is a GREAT time to bring your talents back to the Crossroads of America Scout Band!
We will assemble for the parade in the parking lot of the Scout Office at 1900 North Meridian. Plan to arrive no later than 8:00 A.M. as we are to be at our marshaling point by 9 - 9:30 A.M. (Yes, we will be standing around for a while, but it does take time to get everyone into uniform and to get lined up.) Once we are assembled at the Scout Office, we will "march" to our assigned area on Pennsylvania Street near the float we will be accompanying.
The uniform will consist of the long Boy Scout pants, the dark green Venture shirt (the band has some if you do not own one) and preferably dark shoes. Flag Bearers should be Boy Scouts and be in Full Class A Uniform -- LONG pants.
The fifty American Flags will march in front of the band, then the band members followed by the fifty state flags. We will be marching in one of the last divisions -- the Patriotic Division.
As we never know who is going to be a part of the band or flag corps until time to perform, those who are able should attend the band's rehearsals on Sunday, May 6 and May 20 so we can practice our marching. Rehearsals are held on Sunday afternoons at 2:00 PM at Warren Central High School (east of Post Road) on 16th Street.

Those people who reside on the west side may meet us there at 6:00 AM -- but please let us know we should be expecting you. There will be a bus that returns JUST to Builders Square following the race.
Buses from Camp Belzer will leave at 5:30 AM -- no exceptions! NO PERSONAL VEHICLES ARE ALLOWED IN THE ESCORT TO THE TRACK. The cost to help defray the bus expense is $15.00 per person and must be paid BEFORE boarding the buses. A permission slip must also be signed and turned in PRIOR to boarding the bus. (A copy is enclosed with this newsletter so you can complete it and turn it in as soon as possible. In addition to the ride to the track, you will have a box lunch and tickets to a seat to watch the race. (Bring a change of clothes for after we march around the track.) If you are NOT returning with the buses, you will need a SIGNED statement from your parent or guardian or you will not be permitted to leave. It is preferred that the person who is picking you up at the track meets you at the bus parking area inside Gate 9A (Northwest Turn 4 area).
You must ALWAYS have a buddy with you when you leave the parking area.
When the race is over (Checkered flag, red flag rain out, etc.) you are to report to the buses within hour.....PLEASE BE PROMPT! We will return to Camp Belzer within 2 - 2 hours after the race. There will be one bus that returns to Builders Square only for those who met us on the west side.

Race Weekend Activities
Troop 250 from Byron Center, Michigan will be our guests again this year for the race weekend activities. They will be arriving late on Friday, May 25 and will be staying at Camp Belzer. If you would like to meet with them or stay at Belzer, please let Buddy McLaren or Bob Wiker know (356-9678). We will have a quick breakfast on Saturday morning and pizzas Saturday night. Donuts and milk for Sunday's early rise. Troop 250 will be staying through Sunday night and depart for Michigan on Monday morning.
Troop 250 along with Duane Newby's Troop from Middletown, Indiana and Jim Dean's Troop from Speedway will be joining us for the 500 parade and the 500 race.
Dixieland to Play at Cookout on Circle
The Dixieland Band has been asked to play again for the council's annual Cookout on the Circle. The event will be held on Thursday, June 21 at 12 noon. The Dixieland Band is asked to report by 11:00 am and play until 1:00 PM.
The proceeds for this event help Scouts attend summer camp who might not be able to afford this great experience. If you want to be a part of this performance call Tom O'Nan at 255-6004 or Debbie Miller at 545-0445.
Homeplace Picnic Concert
The Homeplace Picnic will be Saturday, June 9 at the park behind the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. The band has participated in the Homeplace activities for a number of years when they had an annual parade prior to the picnic. The parade has not been held for several years, but they still hold their picnic and look forward to our participation to provide entertainment during their festivities.
The park / church is located on the south side of 111th street east of Meridian. If you take I-465 around on the north side and take the Meridian Street exit north and go to the Delta Faucet building (111th Street). Turn right and go about a mile and the entrance will be on your right.
They would like us to play from 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM. Please arrive in uniform by 10:45 AM so we can get set up and tuned up and ready to start at 11:30.
Girl Scout Wider Opportunity
The band has been asked to participate in the Girl Scouts of Hoosier Capital Council's Wider Opportunity. This event will be bringing Girl Scouts from around Central Indiana as well as from across the country to a week long program. We have been asked to perform at their opening ceremonies on Sunday, June 17.
The event will be at the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center, University of Indianapolis Campus. We will be playing from 6:30 - 7:00 PM as the participants arrive at the center. Shortly after 7:00 we will play the National Anthem for their opening. Please plan to arrive at 5:45 PM so we can get everyone in uniform and set up and ready to start at 6:30. The band is encouraged to remain for the ceremony (about one hour), but can leave after we perform if it is necessary.
Carmelfest Parade
The band has accepted an invitation to participate in the 2.1 mile Carmelfest Parade on Wednesday, July 4. The start time is 10:30 AM, and will need to report by 9:00 AM. The band will be leading the division "Salute to Boy Scouts" and will be followed by scout units from throughout the Carmel area.
Patrick Lindstrom Open House
The band has received an invitation to Patrick Lindstrom's Open House after he graduates from Perry Meridian High School. The graduation ceremony is Sunday, June 3 at 1:00 PM. The Open House will follow the graduation from 3:30 PM - 7:00 PM at the Lindstrom home (158 Dixie Drive).
They are aware the band has rehearsal on this day, but extends an invitation to anyone who wants to come by after rehearsal. If you want to bring your swimwear, their pool will be open if anyone wants to swim. For direction call Patrick at 888-3769.
RCA DOME Upcoming Events
The 2001 - 2002 Colts schedule has been published and we know when the home games are scheduled. It's not to early to contact Sylvia to get your name on the list to work the events at the dome.
The first pre-season game is scheduled for August 11, but we have been excused from that game as there is another event happening that day that will take most of our workers away.
There is also a concert by N'Sync scheduled and we will be working that event as well.
Kudos for the Month
All of our High School Seniors who will be graduating in the next few weeks! Congratulations and good luck in your future endeavors.
Jodi DeBruyne who will be receiving the Silver Award in Girl Scouts on May 8th. The Silver Award is Girl Scouting's second highest award a girl can earn.
Buddy McLaren who has completed the requirements for his Eagle rank and will be sitting for the Board of Review.
Shawn Smock who finished 9th in the state Computer Graphics design competition.
Dixieland Band members who performed for the Tulip Time Scholarship Games.
Last Call for Tour
There are only a few spots left for this years tour to historic Williamsburg and Norfolk Virginia. If you are interested and have not yet submitted an application, please do so by rehearsal on May 20th. Mr. Bill needs to know final counts to finalize room reservations, meals and shirt order.
Tour Shakedown will be held on Sunday, June 10 from 12 noon -- 5:00 PM at Warren Central where we normally practice. Please plan to have ALL fees paid in full and medical forms tuned in by this date. (Earlier turn in for fees and medicals would REALLY be appreciated!) During Shakedown, we will go over all final arrangements for the tour, pass out your tour notebooks, shirts and hats and answer any last minute questions,
A final rehearsal before departure will be on Thursday night June 21 at 7:00 PM at Warren Central Orchestra Room. If you are going on tour, please plan to be at this final rehearsal. You can load your instrument and uniform on the truck so that will be one less worry on departure day.
We will be departing Camp Belzer on Saturday, June 23 (bring sack lunch with you) and stop in Beckley, West Virginia the first night. While in Beckley, we will see the New River Gorge area and take in a performance of an outdoor drama Honey in the Rock. On Sunday June 24 we will head to the Norfolk -- Virginia Beach area of Virginia to establish our "base" camp. While in this area (for 4 nights, 3 days) we will perform several concerts as well as tour Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia Air and Space Museum and take a cruise on a 3 masted "Tall Ship".
Thursday June 28 will be a travel day as we leave the Norfolk, Virginia area and head to Asheville, North Carolina. We will plan to do a concert in the Asheville area and then visit Biltmore Estates on Friday June 29. We will depart Asheville on Saturday, June 30 and head for home and arrive back at Camp Belzer around 6:00 PM.
It's close, but not to late if you want one of the remaining spots on the bus -- contact Mr. Bill at 542-8057 and get an application and let us know of your plans to accompany us on the 2001 Historic Virginia Tour. The cost for the entire week (transportation, lodging, meal, admission to all sights and four tour shirts and a hat is $475.00.
